Group General Counsel Office

Inmarsat’s Group General Counsel Office (GGCO) office comprises five key functions – Group Legal, Corporate Strategy, Government Affairs, Regulatory Policy and Market Access. Details of each of these key functions are set out separately below, but effective collaboration between them is essential for the business. 

The Group Legal function provides legal advice on all aspects of Inmarsat's business and corporate affairs.

Corporate Strategy is responsible for group-wide global strategy and business development initiatives. By evaluating market and competitor intelligence, mergers and acquisitions, and joint venture opportunities, the team support decision-making. They lead on long term development projects with material impact across the business, as well as offering support for key BU-specific related projects.

The Government Engagement function provides a government access and influence capability targeting both the UK, as Inmarsat’s host nation, as well as priority geographies internationally, allied to short and long term commercial ambitions.  It works closely with and through other government facing areas of the business.

Regulatory Policy functions include creating national and global regulatory frameworks and environments that protect our spectrum and allow for the operation of our current/future technologies  and services, while fostering Inmarsat’s recognition as a global thought and technology leader.

The Market Access functions include the necessary actions to obtain authorisations, licences and approvals for the global deployment of Inmarsat services. 

Job Description

The Attorney, Legal Affairs role will report to a VP, Legal Affairs, and will advise stakeholders across the business on a wide range of legal and business matters to enable the execution of the company’s commercial strategies.  

As a key member of the group legal function he or she will be required to provide commercial, corporate and regulatory advice on all aspects of Inmarsat's commercial ventures, negotiation and ambitions, and have the ability to strategically influence senior business stakeholders, as well as anticipate, define and solve critical issues to deliver improvements in Inmarsat’s business and processes.

The individual will draw on his/her legal extensive experience to support the company in its approach to commercial and contractual matters, and to mitigate risk.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal support to Business Units and business areas, drafting and negotiation of direct and indirect distribution agreements
  • Drafting and negotiation of a range of commercial agreements – including related to connectivity supply, procurement, partnering, digital, infrastructure, and IP
  • Provide legal advice to all levels of the company both directly and working with the legal team
  • Advise on pertinent regulation in the areas of telecommunications, data protection, data storage and compliance
  • Advise and support on all corporate transactions – including due diligence, joint ventures, collaboration agreements
  • Provide advice on matters of litigation and disputes
  • Support the internal contracts team to negotiate supplier contracts and distribution agreements, and to mitigate risk

Qualifications

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • UK or common-law jurisdiction qualified lawyer
  • PQE gained at leading law firms and/or in-house
  • Experienced in commercial work
  • Strong interpersonal skills and team spirit
  • Highly responsive
  • Proven negotiation skills
  • Pragmatic, commercial approach to advising internal clients
  • An excellent command of written and oral English
  • Able to work autonomously as required
  • Good common sense

 Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Telecommunications/TMT experience a plus but not essential
  • International experience a plus as will be supporting a global business
